Kerecide

Kerecid: an effective remedy against herpetic keratitis and conjunctivitis

Kerecid, also known internationally as idoxuridine, is an antiviral drug manufactured by Smithkline Beecham in the UK. It belongs to the pharmacological group of antiviral drugs of various groups and is widely used for the treatment and prevention of herpetic keratitis and conjunctivitis.

Kerecid is available in the form of drops and ointment for ophthalmic use. Its active substance, idoxuridine, has pronounced antiviral activity and effectively fights herpes infection, which causes inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye.

Indications for the use of Kerecid include herpetic keratitis and conjunctivitis, both for treatment and for the prevention of relapses. However, it should be noted that there are a number of contraindications and restrictions to its use. Kerecid is not recommended for use in case of hypersensitivity to the drug, heart failure, heart rhythm disturbances, bradycardia, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and predisposition to bronchospasm. It is also not recommended to use it for deep forms of keratitis and during pregnancy.

Some side effects may occur when using Kerecid, including headache, contact dermatitis of the eyelids, corneal opacification and allergic reactions. It is important to note the possible interaction of Kerecid with other drugs. For example, the antiviral activity of Kerecid may decrease under the influence of glucocorticoids, and combined use with boric acid may increase the likelihood of developing conjunctivitis.

In case of an overdose of Kerecid, adverse reactions may occur, such as bradycardia, hypotension, bronchospasm and acute heart failure. Treatment of overdose includes the use of appropriate medications, such as isoprenaline for severe bradycardia and bronchospasm, dobutamine for hypotension, and digitalis for acute heart failure.

When using Kerecid, you should pay attention to some features. In children, it is recommended to combine it with immunostimulants or immunoglobulins to achieve the best effect, since a cytostatic effect on virus replication is possible. It is also important to maintain good hygiene when using the drug to avoid infection of other parts of the eye or contamination of the drug itself.

It is important to note that this information is based on my knowledge prior to September 2021, and there may be updates or new research that I have not considered. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a medical specialist or pharmacist for more up-to-date information about the use of Kerecid and its effects.
