Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)

Ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin C, is one of the most famous and widely used vitamins. It belongs to the group of ascorbic acid and has many beneficial properties for the human body. In this article we will consider the main aspects of ascorbic acid, its production, dosage forms, indications for use, contraindications, side effects and interactions with other drugs.

Ascorbic acid is produced in various countries, including Ukraine. Kiev Vitamin Plant is one of the producers of vitamin C in Ukraine. The distinctive international name for ascorbic acid is “Ascorbic acid”. There are also a number of synonyms for this vitamin, including “Additive Vitamin C”, “Asvitol”, “Ascorbic acid-UBF”, “Bartel Drugs vitamin C” and others.

Vitamin C is available in various dosage forms, one of which is tablets containing 25 mg of ascorbic acid. The main active ingredient is, in fact, ascorbic acid.

Ascorbic acid has a wide range of indications for use. It is used for the prevention and treatment of hypovitaminosis C, hemorrhagic diathesis, capillary toxicosis, hemorrhagic stroke, bleeding of various origins, infectious diseases, intoxications, alcoholic and infectious delirium, acute radiation sickness, post-transfusion complications and other conditions. As an antioxidant, vitamin C is used for atherosclerosis, bronchial asthma, diffuse connective tissue diseases and other diseases.

However, ascorbic acid also has contraindications. It is not recommended for hypersensitivity to the drug, thrombophlebitis, a tendency to thrombosis and diabetes mellitus.

When using ascorbic acid, various side effects may occur. Some of them include irritation of the gastrointestinal mucosa, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, arterial hypertension, metabolic disorders, inhibition of pancreatic insular function, decreased capillary permeability, thrombocytosis, hypervitaminosis C and others. Therefore, before starting to take vitamin C, you should consult your doctor.

Vitamin C may also interact with some other medications. For example, it can increase iron levels in the body and improve its absorption when taken simultaneously with iron supplements. However, the interaction can also be negative; for example, vitamin C can reduce the effectiveness of anticoagulants (drugs that reduce blood clotting) and aspirin when used simultaneously.

Ascorbic acid is an important element of proper nutrition and maintaining the health of the body. It is involved in many biochemical processes, including collagen synthesis, antioxidant protection, participation in the immune system and others. However, as with any medicine, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist before using it for advice regarding dosage, duration of use and possible side effects.
