Co-trimoxazole-Biosynthesis: description, application and side effects

Co-trimoxazole-Biosynthesis is a combined antimicrobial drug containing sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is widely used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, urogenital infections, skin and soft tissue infections, ENT infections, surgical infections, septicemia and other infections.

The drug is produced by the Biosynthesis company in Russia and has the international name - Co-trimoxazole. It is also known under various synonyms, such as Apo-Sulfatrim, Baktekod, Baktoreduct, Bactrim, Bactrim forte, Berlocid, Berlocid 240, Berlocid 480, Berlocid 960, Bi-Septin, Bikotrim, Biseptol, Biseptol 480, Bisutrim, Bripheseptol, Gen- Ultrazol, Groseptol, Dvaseptol, Disepton, Duo-Septol, Intrim, Co-tr, etc.

The dosage form of Co-trimoxazole-Biosynthesis is tablets with a dosage of 480 mg. It consists of two active components - sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which work synergistically and enhance each other's effects. Sulfamethoxazole is an inhibitor of bacterial folate metabolism, and trimethoprim is an inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase, which is also involved in the synthesis of folic acid.

Co-trimoxazole-Biosynthesis is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to the drug. These include respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pleural empyema, lung abscess, pneumonia, including that caused by Pneumocystis carinii in patients with AIDS. The drug is also effective for urinary tract infections, such as urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, epididymitis, urogenital infections, including gonorrhea, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum and granuloma inguinale, gastrointestinal tract infections, such as bacterial diarrhea, shigellosis, cholera (as part of combination therapy), typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, cholecystitis, cholangitis, gastroenteritis, as well as skin and soft tissue infections such as furunculosis, anthracite, acute and chronic wound infections, burn infections, acne, impetigo, carbuncles and other.

When using Co-trimoxazole-Biosynthesis, side effects are possible, such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions (including skin rash, itching, angioedema, anaphylactic shock), headache, dizziness, hematopoietic disorders, increased bilirubin levels in the blood, functions of the liver, kidneys and others.

Co-trimoxazole-Biosynthesis should be taken only as prescribed by a doctor and strictly in accordance with the instructions.
