Caffeine-Benzoate Sodium

Sodium caffeine benzoate is a drug that is used to stimulate the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system. The drug is a purine and imidazole derivative and belongs to the group of psychomotor stimulants.

Caffeine-sodium benzoate is produced by several companies, including ICN October, ICN Polypharm, ICN Tomskkhimpharm, Belmedpreparaty, Biokhimik, Borisov Medical Preparations Plant, Dalkhimfarm, Darnitsa, Moscow Endocrine Plant and Moskhimfarmprep.

Dosage forms of caffeine sodium benzoate include 10% and 20% injection solution, 75 mg tablets for children, 100 mg and 200 mg tablets, and 100 g, 200 g and 500 g substance.

Sodium caffeine benzoate is used to treat diseases accompanied by inhibition of the functions of the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, such as drug poisoning, infectious diseases and others. The drug can also be used for cerebral vascular spasms, to increase mental and physical performance, to eliminate drowsiness, breathing problems and enuresis in children.

Contraindications to the use of caffeine sodium benzoate include severe arterial hypertension, organic diseases of the cardiovascular system (including atherosclerosis), increased excitability, glaucoma, sleep disorders and old age.

When using caffeine sodium benzoate, side effects may occur, such as anxiety, agitation, insomnia, tachycardia, arrhythmias, increased blood pressure, nausea and vomiting. With prolonged use, slight addiction is possible. Sudden cessation of caffeine administration can lead to increased inhibition of the central nervous system with symptoms of fatigue, drowsiness and depression.

Caffeine sodium benzoate may interact with many other medications. It can reduce the effect of sleeping pills and narcotics, as well as increase the bioavailability of acetylsalicylic acid, paracetamol and other non-narcotic analgesics. In addition, caffeine sodium benzoate improves the absorption of ergotamine in the gastrointestinal tract.
