Cotrim-Ratiopharm: description, application and side effects

Cotrim-Ratiopharm is a combined antimicrobial agent produced by the German pharmaceutical company Ratiopharm GmbH. It contains two active ingredients - sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which act synergistically to kill a wide range of bacteria.

Cotrim-Ratiopharm is used to treat various infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, urogenital infections, gastrointestinal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, ENT and surgical infections. It may also be used to prevent relapses of bronchitis and pneumonia in patients with weakened immune systems, including those with AIDS.

However, Cotrim-Ratiopharm has some contraindications, such as hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, liver or kidney failure, B12-deficiency anemia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, pregnancy, breastfeeding and childhood.

In addition, Cotrim-Ratiopharm may cause side effects. The most common are gastrointestinal disorders, such as dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, as well as allergic reactions, including urticaria, rash and Quincke's edema. In rare cases, pancreatitis, stomatitis, glossitis, cholestatic and necrotizing hepatitis, as well as aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia and other hematopoietic disorders may develop.
