Kümmel disease is a serious illness that can be fatal. This disease was discovered in 2017, when a team of researchers from the University of Texas discovered a new form of lung cancer that affects the lungs and neighboring organs.
The origin of the name "Kummaella" (disease) most likely comes from the English word kummel, meaning licorice, which is an herb high in resins that can cause coughing and irritation. However, in this case we are talking about a different type of tumor that develops in the lung, and not in the trachea.
Features of the Keullum form of cancer include rapid spread and aggressive behavior. Symptoms may include cough, blood in sputum, swollen lymph nodes, weight loss and fatigue. But the most critical symptom is high levels of fluid in the lungs—pneumonia due to the spread of cancer cells.
Various methods are used to treat Kümmel disease. In general, preference is given to radiation therapy and surgical removal of the affected organs. Symptomatic treatment may also be effective, but in some cases intensive care and high doses of chemotherapy may be required.
