Lathyrism - scientific definition of the concept: Lathyrism is a common systemic disease that is characterized by inflammation of nerve tissue, manifested by an acute inflammatory reaction between nerves in the upper extremities after accidental injury. Today, a violation of the integrity of the nerves is not a characteristic sign, and a person is not able to realize that a nerve lesion has occurred. The disease is common among the male population; in women it is half as common. The problem is diagnosed in children under the age of fourteen. Clostridium botulism is considered the most common pathogenic causative agent of damage to the upper brachial plexus. In most cases, the cause of the disease remains unclear; it may occur against the background of hypothermia of the peripheral nerves. Clinical picture of the disease: The configuration of the disease is expressed in the following symptoms: Convulsive tension in the upper limb. When touching the palmar surface, the patient feels unbearable pain. Generalized or local convulsions, the occurrence of which may indicate a pathology not only of the brachial nerve, but also of other cranial vessels, leading to loss of consciousness.
