Total leukonychia is a pathological lesion of the fingernails or toenails, in which the pathological process completely affects the entire nail plate. The disease manifests itself in the fact that the nails become thinned (their free edge and “body” become thinner, causing the nail plate to be slightly concave), sticky (as with a fungal infection), and pale yellowish or grayish in color. As the disease progresses, thickening of the nail and bleeding of the area under the nail plate may appear. Often with total leukonychia, an arched limiter appears: a kind of “imprint” of a sock or other item of clothing along the edge of the free edge of the nail. The intensity of this phenomenon depends on the duration of the disease - over time it becomes more distinct. Total leukonychia occurs in both women of all ages and men, and is often a sign of serious health problems that require urgent intervention.
