Levomycetin-Rusfar: description, use, side effects and contraindications

Levomycetin-Rusfar is an antibiotic from the chloramphenicol group, produced in Russia by the company Rusichi-Pharma. Its international name is Chloramphenicol. Levomycetin-Rusfar is widely used for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, such as typhoid fever, typhus, paratyphoid fever, brucellosis, rickettsiosis, tularemia, dysentery, whooping cough, chlamydia, meningitis, brain abscess, pneumonia, sepsis, osteomyelitis, purulent-inflammatory skin diseases, purulent wounds, infected burns, cracked nipples and infectious eye diseases.

Levomycetin-Rusfar is available in the form of tablets with a dosage of 500 mg. Its active substance is chloramphenicol. However, despite its effectiveness, Levomycetin-Rusfar has a number of contraindications and side effects.

Among the contraindications of Levomycetin-Rusfar are hypersensitivity to the active substance, diseases of the hematopoietic organs, acute porphyria, severe renal and liver dysfunction, psoriasis, eczema, fungal diseases, pregnancy, lactation and early childhood (the first months of life). In addition, Levomycetin-Rusfar can cause a number of side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, loose stools, irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, reticulocytopenia, hypohemoglobinemia, agranulocytosis, anemia, psychomotor disorders, disturbances of consciousness, delirium, visual and auditory hallucinations, paralysis of the eyeballs, taste disturbances, decreased hearing and visual acuity, dysbacteriosis, superinfection, cardiovascular collapse, dermatitis and allergic reactions.

It is also necessary to take into account the interaction of Levomycetin-Rusfar with other medications. Cycloserine, for example, can increase hematotoxicity, and phenobarbital can accelerate biotransformation, reduce the concentration and duration of the effect. Levomycetin-Rusfar is also incompatible with cytostatics, sulfonamides, pyrazolone derivatives, diphenin, barbiturates and alcohol.
