Lioresal

Lioresal: anticonvulsant and antispastic agent

Lioresal (international name: Baclofen) is a pharmacological drug used to reduce muscle spasticity. It belongs to the group of various anticonvulsants and antispastic drugs. Lioresal is produced by Pliva from Croatia and Ciba-Geigy from Switzerland.

The dosage form of Lioresal is presented in the form of tablets containing 10 mg or 25 mg of the active substance - Baclofen. Baclofen has a specific effect on the central nervous system, reducing the excitability of the spinal cord and providing anticonvulsant and muscle-relaxing effects.

One of the main indications for the use of Lioresal is multiple sclerosis. The drug helps reduce muscle spasticity, which is characteristic of this disease. Lioresal can also be used to treat affective disorders that occur with alcoholism.

However, Lioresal has contraindications. The drug is not recommended for use in the presence of psychosis, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When using Lioresal, side effects may occur, such as drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, confusion, gait disturbances, nausea, vomiting, constipation and urinary retention. The interaction of Lioresal with other drugs that have a depressant effect on the central nervous system may enhance their effect.

In case of an overdose of Lioresal, symptoms such as drowsiness, loss of consciousness, coma, respiratory depression, hallucinations, mental agitation, impaired ocular accommodation, absence of pupillary reflexes, convulsions, peripheral vasodilatation, hypotension, bradycardia, hypothermia and nausea may occur.

When using Lioresal, you should pay attention to special instructions. The drug is limited in use in cases of impaired renal function and in children under 12 years of age. Persons engaged in professions that require increased attention and speed of reaction should take Lioresal with caution. The concomitant use of alcohol and other drugs that depress the central nervous system with Lioresal is also not recommended.

Lioresal is an important drug for controlling muscle spasticity, especially in multiple sclerosis. However, its use should be prescribed and supervised by a physician to take into account the individual characteristics of the patient and minimize possible side effects.

It is important to consult a healthcare professional or pharmacist for more detailed information about Lioresal, its use, dosage and possible side effects in your particular case.
