Macrocheilia (Macrocheilia)

Macrocheilia is a congenital pathology that is characterized by a significant increase in the size of the lips, usually accompanied by a violation of their function. In some cases, macrocheilia may be associated with other developmental abnormalities, such as thyroid dysfunction or metabolic disorders.

Macrocheilia can manifest itself in various forms, ranging from slight enlargement of the lips to significant changes that can lead to problems with speech and eating.

Treatment of macrocheilia depends on its form and severity. In some cases, surgery may be required to correct the abnormality. Conservative treatments such as physical therapy and medication may also be used.

It is important to note that macrocheilia is a serious pathology that requires careful medical monitoring and treatment. If you suspect macrocheilia, consult your doctor for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Macrocheilia is a rare congenital defect accompanied by pathological enlargement of the lip, especially the lower one. This disease usually occurs in newborns, rarely in childhood. In this case, the hypertrophied lip extends beyond the boundaries of the oral cavity, without causing discomfort to the child. Since the organ is a massive elastic cushion that does not rupture when crying, chewing or talking, it can cause pain when injured - causing painful biting. It can only be treated surgically.

Signs of macrocheilia - When examining a child, the doctor reveals significant development of the lower jaw, which pushes the upper jaw arch posteriorly. The upper lip is located in the mental fossa, the apex of the alveolar process is pushed back. The anterior edge of the dura-mandibular arch protrudes beyond the jaw. A sick child is diagnosed with a hard palate and a sharply convex arch. In the oral cavity, massive hypertrophy of the lower lip is visualized, occupying almost the entire lower jaw and fixed by an intermaxillary scar. An inhibitory consequence of the disease is an elongated frenulum. Quite often the defects are bilateral. - The formation leads to an upward displacement of the distal part of the tongue. The adjacent teeth of the upper jaw are affected to a lesser extent, but have signs of nonspecific carious invasion of the crowns. In severe cases, the teeth pull the hypertrophy down, causing the chin to take on a typical triangular shape. Keratosis develops on the lower lip - the formation of a keratinized layer. The soft tissues of the area swell, bruising and adenosis (neoplasm in the form of a cyst) are possible, developing not only under the lip, but also in the subcutaneous tissue of the cheek and nasal area.

Macrocheilia is usually considered to be a congenital defect, although the possibility of its artificial origin cannot be ruled out (consequences of surgical manipulations, deliberate stretching of the lips for some reason). Macrocheilia is a formidable cosmetic defect. Patients with macrocheilia often note that this pathology significantly reduces their self-esteem and prevents them from leading a full lifestyle. Patients are subject to ridicule, aggression, and face difficulties in communicating with people and carrying out social and professional activities. Many children with macrocheilia suffer from school maladjustment.
