Melancholia is an affective mental disorder characterized by deep feelings of sadness and loss of energy. This disorder is one of the endogenous mental disorders and cannot be diagnosed if the causes of its occurrence are not explained by biological factors. Melancholic depression is one of the types of depressive conditions; its symptoms can manifest themselves either separately or in combination. The disease manifests itself as a significant weakening of mental strength, increased cognitive activity and decreased mood. One of the features of this disease is the presence of a feeling of bodily hyperesthesia, which manifests itself in physical fatigue, sleep disturbance and loss of appetite. Patients also begin to react more acutely to stressful situations and are able to panic. Thus, only that form of depression that is accompanied by a noticeable increase in vegetative symptoms and obsessive thoughts about death can be considered melancholy.
