Muscle that raises the hair (M. Arrectores Pilorum, Pna, Bna, Jna)

Under the hairline there are many muscles, tendons, as well as nerves and blood vessels. Among other muscles, one stands out, called the “levator pili muscle” or abbreviated as M. Arrectoris pilorum. This muscle plays an important role in maintaining the skin.

In Latin, “Arrector Pilorum” means “Lifting fluff”. These muscles help strengthen the hair on the human body. They were so named for the reason that in some areas of hairy skin, on the top of the skull, back, buttocks, under
