The muscles of the genitourinary diaphragm function as a bladder closure. They lie in the bladder, ureters, bulb and urethra, originate from the anterior wall of the bladder, surround the urethra on the sides and end at the level of the beginning of the external urethral sphincter. The function is to bring forward the opposite seminal vesicle and the distal part of the bladder neck and contract the mucous membrane of the urethra and the posterior wall of the vagina, as well as limit the excretion of urine during urination.
