Sodium

Sodium, also known as sodium, is an alkaline earth element of Group I of D. I. Mendeleev’s periodic table of chemical elements. It is designated by the symbol Na and is found in the first group, third period, third row from the beginning of the periodic table and belongs to the main family of alkali metals. Its atomic number is 11 and its atomic mass is 22.98976928. Sodium is one of the most abundant elements on Earth and the most abundant element in the Earth's crust, where its abundance is about 3.2% (by mass).

It was discovered by two Italian scientists - Alessandro Volta and Karl Hempelmann in 1807. It gets its name from the Latin word "natron" - air-dried sodium chloride. And what results from its interaction with water is called “sodium hydroxide” or caustic soda. The atomic number of Na in the periodic system is 11. The reaction to obtain
