What Kiehl’s face masks can do

The New York-based brand has many bestsellers: calendula toner and super moisturizing creams, oil concentrates and whipped body butters. But his biggest hits are his face masks. Kiehl's has several such products - for different skin types and needs, with different ingredients, consistencies, and scents. So finding the perfect remedy is not a problem.

A much more difficult task is to choose just one mask. Although, why not be tempted by two or three options at once, since the brand’s assortment includes masks for a wide variety of purposes. Some help invigorate the skin in the morning, others help restore it during night sleep.

Active components

The variety of functions of Kiehl’s face masks is due to their rich composition. Here is just a partial list of active ingredients included in the formulas.

Turmeric famous for its ability to cleanse the skin of excess sebum and impurities. In addition, it works as an antiseptic and normalizes sebum production.

Cranberry — it’s not for nothing that this berry is recommended for the prevention of colds and flu, because it is rich in vitamin C. And it, in turn, has a reputation as a powerful antioxidant that prevents the skin from aging ahead of time.

Squalane is obtained from olives, but it has been proven that this oil is perfectly compatible with our skin’s own oils. That is why it is absorbed so well and makes the face soft and silky.

Glycerol - an excellent moisture-retaining component. It absorbs water from the air and delivers it to the skin, leaving it hydrated and soft. Kiehl's cosmetics use synthetic glycerin; cosmetics based on it can be used by vegans.

The brand’s chemists use not just kaolin, but a special Amazonian clay, which is mined at the mouth of the Amazon River. It deeply and efficiently cleanses pores and saturates the skin with useful minerals.

Everyone knows the healing properties aloe. Many of the brand's moisturizing products include an extract of this plant.

Calendula extract especially suitable in cosmetics for sensitive and reactive skin: it softens and soothes, relieves irritation.

Chinese parsley Rich in petroselinic acid, which helps irritated skin recover and strengthens its protective barrier.

Bitter Orange, like all citrus fruits, acts as an antioxidant: it protects cells from oxidation, helping the skin stay young longer.

Such reviews are here, from bloggers and on other sites. Well I do not know.
I can smell paraffin. Some hello from the 90s. Sticky, so it's uncomfortable for me to sleep with. Feeling as if the skin "doesn't breathe" and you want to wash it off. Moisturizing at 3 out of 5. After accidentally drying out the skin, I decided to resuscitate it as soon as possible. So after application, it really burned, probably because of the urine in the composition. After the skin, I wanted a cream, so it resuscitated the face better.
Suitable for skin that is fine and has no particular problems.
If the price suits you, you can find more effective masks.

Mask bomb!
After long flights on the plane, this is a general salvation.
Super moisturizing mask. If I could give 10 stars instead of 5, I would!

I wanted to test this popular brand for a long time. and as I was looking for some intensive night care for the face for the winter, I decided to finally buy something from Kiehl's. and she was extremely satisfied! this mask is really like a sip of fresh water for the skin! I will confidently buy other products of this brand!

I like the mask, the effect is excellent. The price here is just great, even though mine still has 2 years of shelf life

The mask is not bad. Took a large amount. I think it will be enough for a long time. Its action is very similar to the absorbing gel mask from Lumene or the night mask from Shiseido. I use a mask as needed. Sometimes a couple of times a week, sometimes more often. The mask does not work miracles, but as an addition to the main one it is well suited.

Good afternoon! Could you please tell me the expiration date of the 125ml mask?

Good afternoon! Svetlana, batch code of this product is 18P902, production date: September 2017.

Grab the mask, the price is fire! I have such a 2 bank. It is very economical and moisturizes, it seems too much! 125 ml is probably enough for 5 years if you do 1 per week. You can share it with a friend, or give it to mom generously.
Winter is near!

A blog about a reasonable approach to choosing cosmetics

I recently decided to finally try the iconic Kiehl's moisturizing mask, and recruit other testers for it. Samplers are quite substantial, so now I can fully tell about the composition of the masks and my feelings about them.

For me, a mask is always an instant effect, unlike serums and creams. If the mask needs to be applied for several months to see the effect, then it is easier to use a serum. The mask itself can provide a charge of hydration or additionally cleanse the skin. The mask will not have special anti-aging properties, because Usually they are applied only for a certain time, and this is not enough. But let's move on to Kiehl's masks.

Let's start with the first mask for instant skin radiance
Turmeric & cranberry seed energizing radiance masque — 3300 rubles.

The mask promises “an instant boost of energy, freshness and radiance to dull, tired skin, leaving it looking healthy and visibly minimizing pores. Ground cranberry seeds promote gentle exfoliation, leaving skin noticeably smoother.”

I'm always a little confused when manufacturers promise an “energy boost” for the skin, how will it become infected? What does energized skin look like? Unclear. It is recommended to apply the mask to cleansed skin, wait 5-10 minutes until it dries completely and then rinse with water.

If you look at the composition, the first ingredients will be Kaolin, Bentonite - this is clay, the most common one. It is used to cleanse the skin.

Sorbitol is the main moisturizing component in the composition. It is a humicate and retains water on the surface of the skin by absorbing it from the environment.

BUTYLENE GLYCOL, SILICA - are responsible for the structure of the mask and prevent it from being too liquid and spreading well on the skin.

VACCINIUM MACROCARPON (CRANBERRY) SEED - those crushed cranberry seeds that help exfoliate the skin. In fact, it is the oil in cranberry seeds that is valuable, not the seeds themselves. The seed oil has antioxidant properties that help the skin fight off environmental aggressors. But the seeds themselves can only serve as decoration.

SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS OIL / JOJOBA SEED OIL - further in the composition there is a little jojoba oil, which helps to moisturize the skin very well.

Next comes a number of different extracts, which are not contained in large quantities to have any effect on the skin. MENTHOL alone may provide a slight cooling sensation, but it may also irritate very sensitive skin.

According to my feelings, a clay mask is just that: a clay mask. It cleanses the skin a little, dries it a little and certainly doesn’t “charge” it in any way. It has no other special properties, the mask can only be used for cleansing, but you can find cheaper options.

AQUA / WATER, KAOLIN, SORBITOL, BENTONITE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, SILICA, CI 77891 / TITANIUM DIOX > Night mask for protection against aggressive environmental factors
Cilantro & orange extract pollutant defending masque — 1600 — 3300 rub.

Quite a strange mask with cilantro extract. Cilantro! The Kiehl's website says it's Chinese parsley, but a quick Google search reveals it's actually cilantro. But let’s continue, the mask is a night mask, it is applied after cleansing and for the whole night. It looks a little green, by the way, not due to the cilantro, but due to the dye in the composition CI 77288 / CHROMIUM OXIDE GREENS. When applied, the mask feels a little cold, most likely due to the menthol in MENTHA PIPERITA OIL / PEPPERMINT OIL. Let me remind you that menthol can irritate sensitive skin.

The manufacturer promises “protection from negative environmental influences, a feeling of comfort and a more uniform skin tone. With constant use, the skin looks renewed.” Antioxidants can protect the skin from the environment; they are not directly presented here, but they are present in various oils in the composition.

The composition itself consists almost entirely of moisturizing oils BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER / SHEA BUTTER, PRUNUS ARMENIACA KERNEL OIL / APRICOT KERNEL OIL, OLEA EUROPAEA OIL / OLIVE FRUIT OIL, SQUALANE (not an oil in the literal sense, but the structure is similar), CORIANDRUM SATIVUM SEED OIL / CORIANDER SEED OIL and others.

In first place after water is PROPANEDIOL - an excellent moisturizing component that additionally helps other components of the composition to be absorbed into the skin, in particular acids.

GLYCERIN is a humicate that moisturizes the skin.

ARGININE is an interesting ingredient, an antioxidant, an amino acid that can restore collagen and further moisturize the skin. Or maybe he can’t, because... its effect has not been proven.

Kiehl's also additionally warns that it is important to use a product with SPF in the morning, otherwise the acid contained in the AHA may increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun's rays. This can really happen from acid, but it is interesting that in the composition it is in the very last place CITRIC ACID. Of course, the ingredients in the composition can be in any order, as soon as their content becomes less than 1%, but the concentration will be less than 1%, which may not be completely ineffective.

According to my feelings, nothing happened to my facial skin after this mask. In the morning nothing changed and after several uses too. It didn’t provide much hydration either, so I didn’t really understand why this mask was needed.

AQUA / WATER, PROPANEDIOL, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER / SHEA BUTTER, GLYCERIN, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, ARGININE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, PRUNUS ARMENIACA KERNEL OIL / APRICOT KERNEL OIL, LAUROYL LYSINE, VACCINIUM MYRTILLUS FRUIT EXTRACT, OLEA EURO PAEA OIL / OLIVE FRUIT OIL, CETEARYL GLUCOSIDE , SQUALANE, NEOHESPERIDIN DIHYDROCHALCONE, CORIANDRUM SATIVUM SEED OIL / CORIANDER SEED OIL, TOCOPHEROL, SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM EXTRACT / SUGAR CANE EXTRACT, SCLEROTIUM GUM, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, FERULIC ACID, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS FRUIT WATER / ORANGE FRUIT WATER, CITRUS LIMON FRUIT EXTRACT / LEMON FRUIT EXTRACT, XANTHAN GUM, LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA OIL / LAVENDER OIL, MENTHA PIPERITA OIL / PEPPERMINT OIL, ORYZA SATIVA BRAN OIL / RICE BRAN OIL, ACER SACCHARINUM EXTRACT / SUGAR MAPLE EXTRACT, CI 77288 / CHROMIUM OXIDE GREENS, LINALOOL, HELIANTHUS AN NUUS SEED OIL / SUNFLOWER SEED OIL, PHYTIC ACID, LIMONENE, CITRAL, GERANIOL, CITRIC ACID

Next mask
Night moisturizing mask , which has already become almost a cult.
Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Masque — 1440 — 2600 rub.

It is really very moisturizing and contains glycerin, squalane and Shea butter (GLYCERIN, SQUALANE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER / SHEA BUTTER). The mask itself is jelly-like and odorless. It is applied to cleansed skin at night. It is recommended to blot it before going to bed, but for me it is completely absorbed.

In the morning I can say for sure that my skin looks much better, younger, rested and full of strength. I really liked this effect. I am ready to recommend this mask to everyone and for all ages, but except for those who have very sensitive skin.

A little more detail about the composition:

PROPYLENE GLYCOL - needed for additional hydration and helps other ingredients penetrate the skin.

TRIETHANOLAMINE is a special ingredient that increases the pH of the formulation and mixes other ingredients of the formulation. The interesting thing is that it can potentially irritate the skin. Definitely not suitable for sensitive skin.

CARBOMER - helps oils and other components mix and not separate from each other and makes the cream gel-like.

UREA - strange as it may seem, synthetic urea, which is present in the composition, can gently exfoliate the skin, which gives a slight anti-age effect.

DIMETHICONE - silicone for extra moisture. It’s very funny, but on the website they write that this mask does not contain silicones. I don’t understand why you should scare everyone with these silicones and still include them in the composition. In fact, there is nothing to be afraid of here at all; silicones in cosmetics certainly won’t harm you.

AQUA / WATER, GLYCERIN, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, SQUALANE, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER / SHEA BUTTER, TRIETHANOLAMINE, CARBOMER, UREA, DIMETHICONE, HYDROXYETHYLPIPERAZINE ETHANE SULFONIC ACID, PHENOXYETHANOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, IMPERATA C YLINDRICA ROOT EXTRACT, OPHIOPOGON JAPONICUS ROOT EXTRACT, SODIUM CITRATE, CITRIC ACID, ALUMINUM STARCH OCTENYLSUCCINATE, CHLORPHENESIN, PSEUDOALTEROMONAS FERMENT EXTRACT, DISODIUM EDTA, ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER

Of all three masks, I only liked the last one. The rest can also be used, but as additional care, not primary care. Everyone needs to decide for themselves what to use depending on their skin type and given needs, but I think we shouldn’t forget that the main care and effect will come from products that stay on the skin for a long time, and that miracles don’t happen 🙂
