**Fire surgery** is a type of endovascular surgery performed to treat varicose veins. It was developed by Soviet surgeon Valentin Ognev in 1956. The operation involves inserting a special tourniquet containing polyvinyl alcohol into a thrombosed varicose vessel, which coagulates the varicose veins.
