Oligodendroglia [Oligodendroglia; Oligo- + Greek. Dendron Tree + (Neuro)Glia); Syn. Oligogli]

Oligodendrocytes are neuroglial cells. They have a round shape and fit tightly to each other, forming tubes.

Oligodendrocytes form the myelin sheath around axons, which ensures the speed of transmission of nerve impulses. The myelin sheath consists of several layers of oligodendrocytes, which are interconnected by tight junctions.

In addition, oligodendrocytes are involved in the regeneration of nervous tissue after damage. They secrete growth factors and are involved in the process of migration and differentiation of progenitor cells into neurons.
