Residual lung volume (RLV) is the additional volume of air in the lungs that remains after a quiet exhalation after the previous volume of air has been completely exhaled. It reflects the functional abilities of the lungs and is an indicator of human health. The residual volume of lung tissue is provided by the large and small airways of the lungs.

The main factor determining AOL is the presence of adhesive lesions (sclerotic lesions) in the pulmonary lumens, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
