Pancoast syndrome: Features, Diagnosis and Treatment
Pancoast syndrome, also known as pancoast tumor or pancoast syndrome, is a rare medical condition that results from the presence of a tumor at the apex of the lung. Named after the American surgeon Harvey Pancoast, who first described it in the early 20th century, Pancoast syndrome is a complex of symptoms associated with tumor compression or invasion of important structures in the apex of the lung.
Characteristic symptoms of Pancoast syndrome include:
- Pain in the shoulder and upper limb: Patients with this syndrome often experience intense pain in the shoulder, shoulder blade, neck and upper limb on the side of the affected lung. Pain may be constant and worse at night
