Paraphrenia Senile

In the world of psychiatry, there are many different diagnoses that can be given to a patient at the first consultation with a psychiatrist. However, there are also disorders that a psychiatrist usually approaches more cautiously and generally offers the patient hospitalization for a more thorough examination and diagnosis. One such disorder is senile paraphrenia or PS. It is quite rare in practice and is characterized by the fact that it most often affects older people.

Paraphrenia refers to persistent, inadequate and distorted statements. They do not correspond to reality and are clearly disconnected in time and place. Paraphrenic thinking in most cases is combined with profound disturbances in all aspects of mental activity (memory, attention, thinking, perception), as well as rapidly progressing personality changes

Paraphrenia of senile type

Paraphrenia is a mental illness characterized by the presence of delusions of grandeur in the patient, that is, a false belief that he is a great person with unique abilities and capabilities. In this case we are talking about senile paraphrenia. This form of the disease is characterized by severe changes in memory, judgment and perception of the world around us.

After menopause, significant changes associated with hormonal changes begin to occur in a woman’s body. Due to these changes, a number of mental illnesses may appear in a person. In particular, many scientists note a high incidence of paraphrenia in senile women during this period of life. One of the most common causes of this disease is dementia.

One of the stages of paraphrenia is called “altruistic insanity.” The patient begins to consider himself better than other people and demands that everyone treat him with respect and respect. He begins to convince others of his importance and significance, declaring that he has special qualities and abilities that are necessary to improve the life of society. At the same time, he usually exaggerates his capabilities, explaining his behavior exclusively by the positive influence of certain circumstances and affairs.

A person at this stage of the disease tries to lead a special lifestyle and requires increased attention. Typically, in a state of paraphrenic delirium, the patient is very active, and his behavior seems intrusive and unusual. His behavior may resemble that of an artist who wants to appear different from others.

If your behavior has caused unpleasant comments and mixed responses from other people, it may be easier for you to accept the diagnosis of “senile paraphrenic.”
