Pastia Symptom

Thoracic symptom with hernia of the xiphoid process, described in 1934 by the Romanian surgeon I.S. Pastier, who drew attention to a characteristic sign of a hernia of the xiphoid cartilage - pain in the stomach when bending the body forward.

If the patient has this symptom, then we can talk about mobility or an easily palpable hernia of the xiphoid crest. This is a diagnostic pattern that should be noted during the first examination and is pathognomonic for cardiac hernias, although it also occurs in other hernias. If the hernia is severe, the xiphoid process literally protrudes 5-10 cm from the hernial canal. Over time, a protrusion appears in the groin area, spasms occur gradually, for at least 2 weeks, starting from the right groin area, to the left of the xiphoid rib. A tumor-like enlargement is located on almost the entire lateral surface of the chest. The hernial canal is 15-20 cm. The canals are impassable, but the hernia can exist for decades if not operated on. The best treatment option for such problems is surgery, and only then can the patient be saved from this disease.
