Polymyxins are a group of antibiotics that can act on a wide range of microorganisms. Polymyxin B (commonly referred to as polymyxin) was developed in the early 20th century and is one of the most important drugs among the polymyxins. It is a complex, multi-component drug that is commonly used in medicine to fight infections caused by bacteria and fungi. However, due to its high toxicity and potential hazard, it is not available for widespread use at home.
The production of polymyxin B, contained in the sulfate form, is limited to a few manufacturers in Russia and Ukraine. The product can be used internally and externally, and its main uses include the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosis or Salmonella.
As with any medicine, the use of polymyxin B sulfate has a number of limitations, including hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, as well as various renal dysfunctions and neuromuscular disorders. In addition, the drug should be used with caution in pregnant women and patients with kidney disease or neuromuscular disorders.
