Portosystemic encephalopathy

Portal encephalopathy (PORTO-cirrhosis, PORTC-diabetes, PORTAS-alcoholic), or encephalopapya portosiatum - a chronic encephalopathic reaction accompanying liver ventriculitis. The causes are gastrointestinal bleeding of a portal nature and (or) the phenomena of microthrombosis or myeloid crises that disrupt the functions of the hepatic circulation.

EPIDEMIOLOGY Most of the patients with portal encephalopathology are in the age range of 41-60 years. More than 3/4 of patients are men who abuse alcohol. Among women, chronic poisoning with toxic substances of plant origin, malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs, cirrhosis, i.e., liver failure against the background of progressive alcoholism, are of great importance. Complaints are subjective and not always expressed unambiguously.
