Prostate adenoma

Prostate adenoma

Prostate adenoma is a benign tumor of the prostate gland that develops in men over 50 years of age. It is characterized by an increase in the size of the prostate gland, which leads to disruption of the outflow of urine from the bladder.

Causes

The exact reasons for the development of prostate adenoma are unknown. It is believed that it is a manifestation of age-related changes in the prostate gland against the background of hormonal imbalance in men.

Symptoms

  1. Frequent urination, especially at night
  2. Weakening of the urine stream
  3. Difficulty starting to urinate
  4. Feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder
  5. Soreness and feeling of pressure in the perineum

As the disease progresses, acute urinary retention may develop.

Diagnostics

  1. Collection of patient history and complaints
  2. Digital rectal examination of the prostate gland
  3. PSA blood test
  4. Ultrasound of the kidneys, urinary tract and prostate gland
  5. Uroflowmetry

Treatment

  1. Drug therapy to improve urine flow (alpha blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors)
  2. Surgical treatment - transurethral resection of the prostate gland, if conservative treatment is ineffective
  3. If there is a severe disturbance in the outflow of urine, a cystostomy may be necessary.

Prevention

  1. Regular examination by a urologist after 50 years
  2. Healthy lifestyle, quitting smoking and alcohol abuse
  3. Normalization of weight, treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Conclusion

Prostate adenoma is a common disease of older men. Timely diagnosis and adequate treatment can avoid serious complications and improve the quality of life of patients.
