Reiter's syndrome: symptoms, causes and treatment

Reiter's syndrome, also known as reactive arthritis, is an inflammatory disease characterized by a triple pattern of arthritis (inflammation of the joints), urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), and conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye). The main feature of Reiter's syndrome is that all these damages are caused by the same pathogen - a microorganism.

Reiter's syndrome most often occurs in young men. Its causes are associated with viral and bacterial infections, as well as with the hereditary characteristics of the human immune system, which may react abnormally to the introduction of a particular pathogen. In the past, Reiter's syndrome was described as a complication of intestinal
