Yellow mercury oxide was widely used in medicine as an antiseptic and antifungal agent. However, due to the high toxicity of mercury compounds, its use is currently prohibited in most countries.

Yellow mercury oxide has an irritating effect on the skin and mucous membranes. If ingested, it causes severe poisoning, manifested by stomatitis, gingivitis, gastroenteritis and kidney damage.

Thus, despite its initial widespread use, the use of mercury yellow oxide in medicine is currently unsafe and not recommended.
