Sabadilla Officinalis

Sabadilla officinale (Schoenocaulon officinale) is a poisonous plant from the Melanthiaceae family.

Common names: lousy grain, lousy grass.

In pharmacology, Sabadilla seeds are used under the name Sabadillae semen.

Botanical description:

  1. Perennial bulbous plant up to 2 m high
  2. Leafless stem
  3. Long leaves up to 1.5 m extend from the bulb
  4. The flowers are small, greenish-yellow
  5. Grows in South and Central America

Active ingredients:

  1. Alkaloids (veratridine, cevadin, sabadine, sabadillin)
  2. Fatty oil, phytosterols, wax, resin

Application:

Previously, sabadilla was used as an insecticidal agent against lice. Sabadilla vinegar and ointment were used.

Currently, sabadilla preparations are prohibited for use in medicine due to their high toxicity.
