Seclusion of Pupils

Seclusio pupillae is a pathological condition in which fusion of the edges of the iris and pupil occurs. This leads to impaired mobility of the pupil and limitation of its expansion and contraction.

The causes of seclusio pupillae can be different. Most often these are consequences of inflammatory diseases of the iris and ciliary body of the eye, eye injuries, as well as tumors and other pathological changes. Pupil fusion sometimes develops after eye surgery.

The main symptoms of pupillary fusion are deformation and immobility of the pupil, impaired reaction to light, and narrowing of the field of vision. Due to the limited mobility of the pupil, the accommodation of the eye suffers.

Diagnosis is based on ophthalmoscopy and study of the pupil's reaction to light.

Treatment is usually surgical. Surgical separation of adhesions between the edges of the pupil and the iris is performed. The prognosis depends on the cause and degree of fusion. Complete restoration of pupil mobility is not always possible.

Seclusio pupillary is a medical procedure in which the patient’s pupil is reduced in size using special medications. With some heart conditions, such as coronary artery disease or hypertension, dilated pupils can be dangerous because it increases the risk of heart attack or stroke. To solve this problem, doctors developed the Seclusio pupillares technique.

Previously, sedation was achieved only by taking medications, but now it is possible to carry out the procedure without hospitalization. The doctor injects a small amount of special eye drops into the patient's eyes, after which the patient begins to lose consciousness and become immobilized. Because of this, the pupils narrow and stop dilating. After the procedure, doctors check the patient’s pupil and send him home.

This procedure is becoming increasingly popular among those suffering from cardiovascular diseases, as well as among people who want to test their vision. In addition, the procedure will be especially relevant for people over 45 years of age, because their pupils tend to dilate.
