Hornets

Hornets are insects from the wasp family of the order Hymenoptera (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). These insects are very poisonous and dangerous; their bite can lead to serious complications for human health, including death. This article will tell you what hornets are, what types exist, and what safety measures should be taken when encountering these dangerous insects.

Hornets live in all climate zones and occupy a wide range of ecosystems. Hornets feed on nectar and pollen and also kill other insects for food. Their main activity is not related to feeding, but to hunting for food for themselves or their nest.

There are several types of hornets, differing in size, appearance and method of nest construction. Some of them reach a length of up to 2-3 cm, others - up to 3-4 cm. All hornets have a characteristic shape: an oblong body on six legs with large faceted eyes and a sharp sting, due to which it can be confused with a wasp.

The main types of hornets in Russia are the common hornet (Vespula vulgaris), which lives everywhere, including cities, and the yellow-leaved hornet (Dolichovespula spp.), which usually lives in gardens and dacha villages.

Hornet venom is fatal to many insects, but not to humans. The usual outcome of an encounter with hornets is swollen skin under the bite site, swollen swollen limbs, bruises, headache, chills and other symptoms of poisoning. The threat to life is minimal, and the venom is not neurotoxic and does not cause seizures.
