Introduction
The name of Professor Shomoji, who developed the method for discovering the facts we know about the chemical composition of the cell, is well known to historians of science. He was a unique, gifted and interesting person. He became best known for the work he devoted to modifying a statistical method developed by the American anatomist Pearson: he used a similar method to determine the composition of chemical elements in cellular structures.
Professor Shomoji began his work at Kyoto Medical University, where he studied physics and chemistry. He then continued his education in the USA, where he graduated from Harvard Medical School. There he conducted his first studies in cell biology. However, Professor Shomoji remained a doctor, so his professional interests mainly included the study of genes, genotype and the structure of biological molecules.
