Symptom of the Illusion of Doubles

The symptom of double presence illusion or double occupancy illusion (Capgras syndrome) is a complex polymorphic symptom complex characteristic of schizophrenia and (in some cases) affective psychoses, caused by false recognition of familiar people appearing in the patient’s mind in the form two, three or more identical, mirror personalities [1] [2] [3]. The syndrome received its name from the French psychiatrist Jean Eugene Jacob Capgras in 1883.
