The brain skull is one of the three bones of the human skull, belonging to the intracranial bones, or central, which performs a supporting and protective function for the brain. Represented by the cerebral hemispheres (upper - sagittal and lower - parietal).
The upper edge of the halves of the brain skull has a protrusion - the frontal tubercle, from which the parietal bone extends downwards. The lacrimal and transverse olfactory openings are attached to the inner surface of the frontal tubercle. The posterior border of the skull is projected at the occipito-sphenoid junction.
The surface of the bones of the cerebrum is uneven and is represented by roughness and protrusions: the supraorbital edge has a depression of the upper nasal meatus, a wavy suture is located along the midline, and behind the anterior edge of the transverse gyri there is a connecting groove - a trace of the first large (anterior) fontanel, which smoothly turns into a point in adults secondary suture - posterior connecting groove. The vertical edge of the frontal bones has two limba - ridges for muscle attachment. The surface of the midbrain bones is smooth and slightly convex.
The bones of the brain part of the skull, as well as the frontal bone, do not reach the lower jaw. According to the occlusal plane of the cranial bone, the facial skull is not divided. The inner ear and carotid arteries, like brain vessels, are immersed in the substance of one bone - the occipital bone.
