Spermatogenesis

Spermatogenesis is the process of formation of mature spermatozoa in the convoluted seminiferous tubules of the testicles. Spermatogonia located on the basement membrane undergo several mitotic divisions. The total number of spermatogonia in the human testicle is about 1 billion.

There are two main types of spermatogonia: A and B. Some spermatogonia A, which divide mitotically, remain stem, i.e. retain the ability to divide and maintain their population. The rest differentiate into spermatogonia B, which divide mitotically, then differentiate into first-order spermatocytes and enter meiosis.

During the process of meiosis, spermatocytes of the second order are formed, from which haploid spermatids are formed in meiosis II. The latter turn into mature spermatozoa during the process of spermiogenesis.

The entire process of sperm formation from spermatogonia to mature sperm takes 70-80 days.
