Split Consciousness

Double consciousness, also known as alternating consciousness, is a mental disorder in which a person exhibits two or more different personality states. This condition is characterized by the presence of two or more separate personalities in one person, each of which is dominant at a certain time.

People with dual consciousness are often unaware of the existence of other personalities or cannot control them. The transition from one personality to another can be sudden and involve significant changes in behavior, speech, memories and relationships. Some personalities may have their own names, ages, genders, personalities, preferences, and memories.

The causes of double consciousness are not completely clear, but this disorder is often preceded by severe psychological trauma at an early age. Treatment includes psychotherapy and sometimes medication. The goal is to integrate different personalities into a single, functional whole.
