Stereotypy

Stereotyping is the persistent repetition of some complex but meaningless action, which is performed each time in the same way as before. Stereotypy is often observed in catatonia and childhood autism; sometimes it is a separate manifestation of mental retardation. It occurs more often in patients who have lived in special medical institutions since birth.

The presence of stereotypy in a person can be an obstacle to his normal life; sometimes the patient can even cause physical injury to himself as a result of periodic repetition of such actions.

Medications such as phenothiazines and behavioral therapy are sometimes used to treat this condition.
