Sulfadimethoxine: use, dosage, side effects and contraindications

Sulfadimethoxine is an antibacterial agent belonging to the sulfonamide class. It is used to treat various infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis, central nervous system infections, dysentery, inflammation of the urinary and biliary tract, and wound infections.

Sulfadimethoxine is taken orally once a day, and the intervals between doses should be 24 hours. On the first day, 2 g (1 g) is prescribed, and subsequent days, 1 g (0.5 g) is prescribed, depending on the severity of the disease. Children are prescribed 25 mg/kg on the first day and 12.5 mg/kg on subsequent days.

Although sulfadimethoxine is an effective antibiotic, it can cause side effects. Some of them include headache, dyspepsia and allergic reactions. If you notice any side effects, consult your doctor.

Sulfadimethoxine is not recommended for people with hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, as well as those who have diseases of the hematopoietic system, kidneys and heart. Elderly people and pregnant women are also not recommended to use sulfadimethoxine without consulting a doctor.

Sulfadimethoxine is available in the form of tablets of 0.2 and 0.5 g. Before starting to take sulfadimethoxine, you should consult your doctor to evaluate the indications and contraindications for its use, as well as correctly determine the dosage and duration of treatment.
