Supraclavicular Fossa Large

The large supraclavicular fossa (lat. fossa supraclavicularis major) is an anatomical area located above the collarbone. It is bounded by the sternocleidomastoid muscle anteriorly, the trapezius muscle posteriorly, and the clavicle inferiorly.

The large supraclavicular fossa is part of the neck region. It contains the brachial plexus and its branches, as well as the superficial cervical vessels. This area is often used to place central venous catheters because the subclavian vein and its tributaries are located here.

Palpation of the supraclavicular fossa allows you to assess the condition of the regional lymph nodes. Enlarged lymph nodes in this area may indicate pathological processes in the organs of the chest, neck or upper limb.
