Interarticular sternocostal ligament

The sternocostal interarticular ligament (l. sternocostale interarticulare, BNA) is a ligament connecting the sternum to the ribs. It is located between the joints of the sternum and ribs.

This ligament provides a movable connection between the sternum and the ribs, allowing them to move during breathing. When you inhale, the ribs rise, increasing the volume of the chest, and the sternum moves forward slightly. When you exhale, the reverse process occurs - the ribs descend, the volume of the chest decreases, and the sternum returns to its original position.

The sternocostal interarticular ligament, together with other structures (such as muscles, rib cartilage, etc.), provides the mobility of the chest necessary for the act of breathing. Damage to this ligament can lead to impaired respiratory movements of the ribs and limited mobility of the chest.
