Syphilis Gummous

**Syphilis humous** or **humous** is the last stage of primary syphilis, followed by, in the absence of treatment, the second period of the infectious disease; syphilitic constitution or syphilitic appearance. It is characterized by progressive degeneration of the skin with bluish-purple scabs, scleradenoids, parenchymal keratitis and proliferative changes in the vessels of the conjunctiva and sclera (gummy type conjunctivitis, sclerencephalitis), as well as severe neurasthenic mental disorders. With a late diagnosis, finely nodular diffuse infiltration of the cornea and white scars on the sclera, especially along the vessels, may be detected. Certain symptoms are also observed in latent syphilis.
