Thiabendazole (Thiabendazole)

Thiabendazole is an anthelmintic used to treat intestinal infestations by pinworms or other worms. Prescribed internally; can sometimes cause vomiting, dizziness and stomach discomfort. Trade name: Mintezol.

Thiabendazole belongs to the group of benzimidazoles and has a wide spectrum of anthelmintic activity. It is effective against nematodes (pinworms, roundworms, whipworms, trichinella), and also suppresses the larval stages of cestodes.

The mechanism of action of thiabendazole is to disrupt the energy supply processes of helminths by suppressing fumarate reductase activity. This leads to depletion of glycogen and glucose stores in the parasites.

After oral administration, thiabendazole is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching maximum plasma concentrations after 1-2 hours. The half-life is approximately 3 hours. It is excreted mainly in the urine unchanged.

Thiabendazole is used to treat enterobiasis, ascariasis, trichuriasis, hookworm, and trichinosis. The course of treatment is usually 1-3 days.

Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness. Allergic reactions are rarely possible. Contraindicated during pregnancy.

Thiabendazole is available in tablets and suspensions for oral administration. The most famous brand is Mintezol.
