Toxicosis

Toxicosis is the harmful effects of toxins on the body; Usually this term refers to any disease that develops as a result of the toxic effects of a substance on the body.

Toxins can enter the body in various ways - through the digestive system, respiratory tract, through the skin and mucous membranes. They accumulate in tissues and disrupt the normal functioning of organs and systems.

Toxicoses include diseases such as lead poisoning, mercury poisoning, and alcohol intoxication. Toxicoses can occur when taking various medications, as well as when using drugs and other psychoactive substances.

Acute toxicosis is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and disturbances of consciousness. Chronic toxicosis leads to the gradual development of pathological changes in the organs and systems of the body.

To diagnose toxicosis, it is important to identify the toxic substance and the routes of its entry into the body. Treatment depends on the type of toxin and the severity of poisoning, and may include gastric lavage, antidotes, and hemodialysis. Prevention of toxicosis involves preventing contact with toxic substances.

Toxicology is a science that studies the properties of toxic (poisonous) substances and develops means to combat them. The definition of poison is very complex, the definition of toxin is not so strict and covers a large number of substances used in medicine and industry. Here are some definitions from the Great Medical Encyclopedia.

Definition of toxic substances Toxicity is the individual specificity of the action of a poison, in other words, the relationship between the action and the amount of poison. A specific dose of poison determines the corresponding signs of poisoning, causing the body’s immediate reaction to the poison. Poison is any substance or mixture of substances that is harmful to the body. This definition is quite broad, as it includes both toxic and poisonous substances. Thus, the poison can be either toxic or non-toxic. Examples of the latter are dimethylmercury (DMR) and methylphenylamine (MPA), which when inhaled can cause rejection of transplanted organs and blood vessels. It is paradoxical that these substances are included in the list of Drugs of choice for genetic myelinase deficiency, the treatment of uterine fibroids and some kidney diseases. The reasons can be completely different: after the Chernobyl accident, cases of hemostasis disorders were noted in adults and children who were treated with dimethylmercury, which is the main component of hygiene tests used to control
