Topral

Topral: Antipsychotic from Macedonia

In the world of pharmaceuticals, there are many drugs developed to treat various diseases. One of these drugs is Topral (international name - Sultopride), produced by the Alkaloid company in Macedonia. Topral belongs to the group of antipsychotics - substituted benzamides used in psychiatry for the treatment of psychoses and other mental disorders.

Topral is available in several dosage forms, including 400 mg tablets, 200 mg/2 ml injection, and 200 mg powder for injection. Its active substance is sultopride.

The drug Topral is widely used for the treatment of acute and chronic psychoses, such as anxiety, impaired consciousness, delusions, hallucinations, including cases associated with schizophrenia. It is also effective in states of aggression and agitation, including acute mania and chronic alcoholism.

Despite its effectiveness, the use of Topral has some contraindications. The drug is not recommended for hypersensitivity to its components, bradycardia (pulse less than 65 beats per minute), pheochromocytoma (including suspicion of its presence), pregnancy (especially in the third trimester), lactation and hypokalemia (low potassium content in the blood).

Like most medicines, Topral may cause some side effects. These may include lethargy, drowsiness, dyskinesia (including early symptoms such as spasmodic torticollis, trismus, oculomotor disturbances, and late symptoms), extrapyramidal disorders, convulsions, bradycardia, orthostatic hypotension, hyperprolactinemia, amenorrhea, galactorrhea, gynecomastia, impotence, frigidity , weight gain and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, manifested by hyperthermia, pallor and autonomic disorders.

Topral may interact with other drugs. It enhances the depressive effect of narcotic analgesics, antitussives, barbiturates, tranquilizers and ethanol. When administered concomitantly with levodopa, the effects of both drugs may be weakened. Topral may also affect the action of tricyclic antidepressants and guanethidine.

It is important to note that the information provided here is based on my knowledge as of September 2021. You should always consult your doctor or pharmacist before you start using any medicine, including Topral.
