Thrombectomy

Thrombectomy is a surgical operation to remove a blood clot from the lumen of a vessel. If the clot has already formed, then intervention may be necessary - as a rule, this is done only in certain cases and with the consent of the patient. In such situations, open thrombectomy is performed. In medicine, there are total and selective thrombectomy. In a total thrombectomy, surgery is performed on the entire aneurysm.

This technique is rarely used and may possibly lead to rupture of the damaged artery or its spasm. This may negatively affect the further function of the vascular system. Selective thrombectomy is a type that is preferred because only the blocked part of the artery is removed. The blood flow through the artery that remains is completely preserved.
