A vivarium (from the Latin vivarium, from vivus - “live”) is a special room for keeping and breeding animals.
Vivariums are used for scientific purposes - to conduct experiments and study animal behavior. There are also vivariums in zoos, aquariums and other institutions where various animals are kept and shown to visitors.
Vivariums maintain optimal conditions that are as close as possible to the animals’ natural habitat. This applies to temperature conditions, humidity, lighting, and the landscape of the enclosure.
Vivariums are divided into species-specific - for keeping animals of the same species (for example, terrariums for reptiles, aquariums for fish) and mixed, where different types of animals live together.
Keeping animals in a vivarium requires knowledge of their biology, needs, and behavioral characteristics. A very important point is feeding and caring for the inhabitants of the vivarium. The health and well-being of its pets depends on the professionalism of the vivarium staff.
