Spasm of the hand and fingers, spasm of the hand and fingers (spasmus scriptorius), is one of the most common nervous disorders of the fingers, consisting of involuntary contraction of the muscles of the hand and fingers, causing extreme difficulty in writing. The first cases of spasms date back to the 19th century, but are also found among medieval writers. At the beginning of the 20th century. noted by outstanding writers of our time: L. Tolstoy, K. The causes of the disease are often overwork due to long work, serious illness, etc. The general decline in the author’s performance during an acute outbreak of neurosis that interferes with creative work is called a critical spasm. Sometimes a critical spasm takes on a phobic character and is expressed by fear of the inability to continue work (there are known cases of cessation of creative work on the day before which a psychiatrist diagnosed a “crisis state”). The creative possibilities of the disease are expressed in the absence of even ordinary active thought, although the author’s general health does not suffer. A type of spasm is a convulsive contraction of the facial muscles associated with difficulty writing or reading.
