Itching begins from the area of skin along the wrist line, often detected in the form of red tracks along which rashes (blisters), peeling with crusts are visible. Itching is typical at night and intensifies when scratching. Later, weeping papules may appear. The stage of generalized hair loss, proctosigmoiditis, and enuresis can be extremely difficult.

The disease is transmitted through direct contact with a sick person, through contact with infected objects, possibly also through a handshake, etc. Patients are contagious. Manifestations of the disease gradually intensify over 6-8 weeks from the onset of the disease. In some cases, the duration of the disease is several months. Approximately 80% of people who have recovered from the disease develop resistance to re-infection.
