Akarology - (from the Greek words akaro - tick and logos - study) is a branch of zoology that studies ticks.
Acarology studies the morphology, anatomy, physiology, ecology, taxonomy and geographical distribution of ticks. Particular attention is paid to tick species of medical and veterinary importance, as well as species that cause damage to agriculture.
Ticks belong to the class of arachnids. These are small arthropods that lead a parasitic lifestyle. Many types of ticks are carriers of dangerous diseases in humans and animals, such as tick-borne encephalitis, Lyme disease, and rickettsiosis.
Acarology is closely related to medical parasitology, veterinary medicine, epidemiology and other sciences. Knowledge in the field of acarology is used to develop methods for the prevention and control of tick-borne infections.
