Are a class of single-stranded nongastronomic RNA viruses grouped into the family Alphaviridae. They are widespread, but phylogenetic studies allow them to be divided into 9 groups. For example, Coxsackie viruses are group A, and the ECHO virus, despite belonging to the family of polyomaviruses, is subgroup B.
