Asphyxiated Membrane Syndrome is a breathing disorder in infants that can lead to death in the first days of life. This occurs because the baby's lungs cannot receive enough oxygen due to a disruption in the gas exchange process in the lungs. The cause of the syndrome is an infection that can occur in a newborn baby before birth or in the womb. Respiratory failure occurs due to the accumulation of hyaline membranes under the lung tissue. These membranes are formed during inflammation of the airways, causing oxygen starvation of the lung tissue. Aseptic membrane syndrome is fatal if not treated promptly. It is important to know that this disease manifests itself not only in newborns, but also in older children.
